    Default Ears

I know we've discussed this before but what is everyone using to treat/clean ears?

I've been taking care of Remy for the past week and his ears (despite having gone to the vet) are just nasty...The vet is treating him as if it is a bacterial problem but I think it is yeast.

On Tuesday, I took him off of the ointment they had sent him home with, cleaned them really well with some diluted alcohol (to dry them up) and switched him over to Otomax (RX and anti-fungal)...I have been giving him benedryl twice a day.

They look better so I don't know if it is the benedryl or the otomax..

His family is home and I told them that if it was me I would have the groomer shave his ears to lighten them up and even consider taping them up on top of his head.

What is he eating? Faust, and now Bosker, got gunky ears until I started them on any of the no grain, fish & sweet potato stuff. Anytime I tried to switch back, its almost instant yucky ears.

For actually cleaning them, I use diluted apple cider vinegar or baby wipes if they're really nasty.

    He's eating Evo red meat.

Birdie's ears were nasty until I took her off of all poultry and she has not had one problem since.
I'm starting to wonder if he is allergic to beef...

I use baby wipes on Maxine because she will let me. Reggie just gets the ear cleaner drops.

Which reminds me of what I now need to do today. Thanks.

I would definitely suggest that he be switched to either the Turkey and Chicken or Salmon and Herring variety and see if that helps....

We don't have to clean ears too much here - even on Beowulf. When we do, I use either an apple cider mixture or contact lens solution. Weird, I know.

Definite possibility. Maybe see if they're willing to try him on a bag with another type of protien base to see if it helps?

Basja has one chronically gunky ear. I use the cleaner from the vet by Vet Solutions every 2 weeks. Now that you mention it has gotten a bit worse since being on the chicken based food rather than the buffalo.....

Thanks everyone...Amanda, I'll send her that information...

They're pretty agreeable people..and they love Remy...They are willing to try whatever he needs.
I suggested to her today that we get him on a novel protein like fish...

I like the one Amanda suggested, too. I made my own with a recipe from the vet that was very similar to what's in that brand. The gentian violet can stain stuff, so be careful where you apply it and what you are wearing. I did not have major issues, but that was the warning I was given. It did stain my counter for a while, though.

We use thr Apple Cider and water 50/50 mix and it worked great on Lowe's ears. My vet asked me what I was using. When I told him what it was he said it made sense. He also asked me toung in cheek not to tell his other patients. He gave me some otomax for the rim of her ear though because she had some bumps. He said to make sure to wait several hours between the cider cleaning and the application of the ottomax because the cider will make it not work.

We also used the apple cider vinegar mixed with water 50/50. It worked great. My two generally have good ears - but when Caza's got all nasty it cleared it up right away.
