Default How I do raw diet preparation for feeding.

This morning I made a video on how to do basic raw diet.
Its simple, and easy to do. All the ingredients on on the counter( except the organ meat), but to show what I use. Normally I just take out what I need when I need it.
There are many ways to do raw diet- this is just to show how I have done it for all these years.

    Here you go...

/edit- new video coming as this one I forgot to use the solid gold bone meal, and the organ meat. Sorry about that.

Thanks Michelle, its nice to see how everyone does raw differently. Like I dont use any veggies in their everyday diet, although my two think baby carrots are treats so they still get a small amount of veggie, almost everyday.

How much meat and what are those other 2 ingredients that are shown in the bag and container?

Sorry all I deleted the video due to the fact I left some things out.
To make that video I had to put everything in one area, and not where it usually is. The organ meat, bone meal ( solid gold steamed bone meal) is not shown. I will make a new video. ( later on today.)

As far as the meat from the butcher, its their trimmings of rib eye, roast etc. It also has alot of fat in it. I give a total of meats with or without bone ( including organ) for the percentage of the dog. Then I add the supplements. Roughly Lindsey and NIna get a total of one pound twice a day. Zubin is on a diet right now and currently he is getting a bit over 3/4 of a pound.

I re did the video as I left out some things. I use containers that can stack in a corner on one kitchen counter, and did not take it out for the first video. ( add If I start handling certain things, with supplements being last, the dogs get up to " eat.." lol).
Only things missing in this video is the organ meat, and the fish. The reason is as I go back and forth from chicken livers, hearts, gizzards, to like beef liver, it does change. My current beef liver for this evenings feeding is defrosting in the refrigerator. And the next new can for the mackerel has not been opened yet for tonights feeding.
    Here we go.

Hi Michelle, I think it'd be helpful if you put the approximate way to figure out how much to feed a dog (do you go by the 2% of ideal body weight rule as a starting point?), the percentage of bone you feed, the percentage of organs, the percentage of meat, the reason why it is important to feed a balance of Ca:P and why it is imperative that these things are monitored, the fact that variety makes this diet healthy but without variety it is not optimal, and a disclaimer about the use of cruciferous vegetables because the use of something like that can affect thyroid levels in dogs. What is your reasoning for including yogurt in every meal? http://www.ehow.com/list_5907647_lis...nic-foods.html

I think it is interesting that everyone has their own take on raw feeding, but I think the reasoning behind what you do is important so that people can see your logic and decide whether they agree, or not.

IMO, putting out a 'how to' video is a big responsibility, so it should be complete and discuss the value of what you are doing and why and be explicit about how you add variety and why that is important. What the balance of red meat: poultry and how the dogs get enough Ca2+ in their diets. You mention Solid Gold bone meal as an additive, but you do not stress the importance of why you decide to use this supplement (and why it may not be necessary for people if they use more bone-in meats to achieve the optimum Ca2+ balance).

How do you know how much Ca2+ that they eggshells you add provide and how do you decide how much bone meal to add, etc. These are really important aspects of raw feeding. Many people do not use eggshells or bone meal but get calcium in other ways.

I think it's a great idea to put out a 'how to' video and if you are re-doing it, I hope you can add some more helpful tidbits in there to increase people's knowledge of what is necessary in a raw menu and why.

I debated doing that however there are so many factors- the age of the dog, the weight of dog, the over all condition of the dog etc would influence how much percentage.
Using the whole egg, and the solid gold steamed bone meal, plus the other boned meat, is sufficent for calcium, phosphorus etc levels. Also its not a ' how to' video but rather a ' This is how I feed raw diet to my dogs'.

/edit- YIPPEE! I just got back from a vet and also a nutrionalist and this was his reaction to the video " Super and well done!"

I appreciate your response, but I think the issues I outlined above warrant mention in a video such as this. By posting on YouTube, this is inherently a 'how to' video because it is offering information and a guide in the way you are feeding raw and is posted on the internet. It doesn't seem difficult to explain a starting point for choosing an amount to feed and explaining the basic tenets of a good raw diet which is composed of 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organs. Each of the components should be calibrated and rotated for variety to insure a wide range of nutrients.

I do not post advice such as this as I know it is difficult, but I think for those who do, the responsibility to give a complete picture of what is needed is vital.

Well I say several times for the size weight of the dog. Example ' I measure out the amount for each dog', chicken out for each dog etc.
