Has anyone's dog ever had and been treated for salmonella??
Has anyone's dog ever had and been treated for salmonella??
The following is just what I've been told. I was worried about salmonella and trichinosis when we first started feeding the dogs raw. I was told by the vet that they weren't really susceptible to those things....he was mostly right. In the eight years (or whatever) that we were feeding raw, they never had an issue. Heck, they rarely got sick at all during that time.
From what I've read since, dogs _can_ get salmonella, but their immune system needs to already be compromised for there to even be a chance of it. It's very rare, in other words. Their digestive tracts are just too quick/short for the bacteria to take hold.

I have a friend whose yorkie died from salmonella years ago. They traced it back to her bowl of water outside which the birds had been sitting on (pooping in).
What has me concerned is that yesterday, Echo started having explosive diarrhea. I mean, she'd be sleeping one minute and then suddenly run to the back door and have diarrhea all the way there. VERY unlike her. I was up with her hourly last night because she had the runs all night and was constantly crying to go out.
Well, this morning a friend mentioned to me that she was glad she has only organic eggs. I'm so out of the loop that I didn't realize there had been a recall on eggs. It hit me that I bought some eggs recently (we don't eat eggs...I only buy them to give to the dogs) and she had a raw egg yesterday morning. So I looked up info online about the recall and of course, the brand of eggs we have is part of the recall. My daughter works at a veterinary diagnostics lab so off I went this AM with a stool sample so they can culture it. I then called the vet and asked her about salmonella and she said once in a blue moon, they'll treat a dog with it. Willow also had an egg but her body is much stronger than Echo's and she has the runs, but not explosive like Echo's.
So anyway, now I sit and worry, waiting for the results.......
Hoping for the best. We've had explosive diarrhea (well, the dogs have) in the past and it's never been salmonella.

Yes, friend of mine actually had about 3-4 dogs come up with it after eating something found on the ground. One was extremely ill and she almost lost him...the others were simply ill and all were miserable. All her dogs are extremely well cared for and healthy, IMO it DOES happen, and is something that should be carefully guarded against and looked out for.
The dog that was quite ill needed a stay at the docs to recover...iv's and such.
