Wasn't someone giving these to their dog themselves? Do you remember who? I have a pyr friend and her vet said $150-$200 month for the injection for the vet to do it.
Also her vet won't do hip replacement on a pyr. He says they are too big? huh?![]()

I believe Cortney was giving them to her Pyr, Jack. Speaking of Cortney, anyone know how she's doing? I miss hearing from her.

I know she went back to work. Is probably really busy.
Our vet will sell you the medication and syringes/needles if you want to do it yourself.
I did it with Raleigh.
I can't remember if you need a script or not but I think I have seen it in some of the catalogues that come through here.
I do know that a lot of vets do not like doing ortho surgery on the giant breeds because statistically (or at least it used to be this way) they don't have great outcomes. If she has access to a veterinary teaching hospital or an canine ortho specialist she should get another opinion.
Raleigh went to Birmingham to an ortho specialist for his hip and his knee and he did great. There is an Akita in our class right now that just went up there a few weeks ago to remove a bone spur from his elbow with the same group that we used.
I love our vets and I think they are competent but they are the ones that referred us out to Dr. Milton's group in Birmingham.

Yes Courtney gave Jack the shots and they seemed to help. I know she was pleased and jack was able to do more at bark park when we were all still going. My friend Bev gives them to her 10 yo Newfie and she doesn't think they help but without who knows how bad she'd be.
I gave one to my first saint but his hips were so far gone for it to help much. Then we had the issue with him being dropped and well that all became the least of his worries
I tried Adequan with Daisy and she seemed to have a bad reaction to it (not the first time, but after that, each time got worse for her), although this is very uncommon. We bought vials that lasted for 3 or 4 injections. Each vial was around 140.00 if I recall. Our techs at Cornell's pain mgmt clinic did the injections for free and they even came out to the car so that Daisy would not have to get in and out of the car an extra time. I tried to do it at home, but I chickened out b/c Daisy kept moving around and I got nervous.
Thanks guys that's what I thought. I will pass the info on. She does live in PA so I told her to contact Penn State vet school and also gave her the ortho specialist group that did Jaspers surgery if nothing else for a 2nd opinion.
If she has access to Penn State Veterinary School - she should go there...
We did get to a point of diminishing return with the injections but I have no doubt that they gave Raleigh an additional two pain free years..
I thought it was worth the money we spent..
We did the loading dose (once a week for six weeks, I think) then a monthly maintenance dose.

I asked Teresa to join here. I would rather she talk to all of you that have used it than me trying to pass the info on.
