    Default Wam Bam Fencing

So with this year's tax refund, we will be installing a fence in our backyard. This tie out crap just isn't cutting it.

As I perusing the web for design ideas and companies, I came across THIS site. It is vinyl fencing, which I am not sure if I am a fan of, although this states it is professional grade rather than the stuff you get at Home Depot. Not sure what the difference is.

It is a digless fence system that uses posts with reinforced steel posts inside. We would install it ourselves, saving money, which is nice because the product itself is pricier than HD or Lowe's.

The company is pretty new - 2009 - but I just wondered if anyone out there has used this or knows of someone who did and what they think of the installation process and/or final result. Input?

We have the vinyl fencing and looking at that site, I think that is how ours was installed tho we did not do it. We have the privacy type along side the house then the picket style up the hill and across the back. It is extremely secure imo - the nutso dog next door (80# lab) has on many occasions attempted to lunge through it.

It's about 5 years old I think - easy up keep and much more attractive than the Iron fence we had before. 3 of our neighbors bought at the same time and they are just as happy as we are.

    Thanks for the input Laura.

We also will be doing half privacy, half picket. Do you think the 4 foot picket will be high enough to contain Maxine should she try to chase a squirrel and jump the fence?

If she is anything like Truman - 2 feet is enough. LOL

4 ft is high enough to contain my two (for now) We saw Boku jumping for excitement yesterday and she cleared 1.5' off the ground with her hind feet!!! If she gets smart she will figure out she can get over the fence with momentum...... This is the first time I have found myself wishing for dumb dogs

4ft is the max height allowed in my neighborhood. Stupid HOA.

The momentum thing is what concerned me also. But then Adam pointed out: When do our dogs ever gain momentum?

Yeah, mine only have 55lbs to heave around, adding 100 would decrease the chances of momentum!

I am putting in a new fence this year too. I considered 4 ft since the little ones would do fine, but then I have my ex daughter in law (the bitch from hell) living next door. So I am going with 6 ft privacy all the way around. The other reason is that Lewie barks like a maniac when he sees the neighbors dog. thought this way, he can't see her. LOL

You might have guest dogs over that do have momentum.

Thanks a lot for this thread. We have 4ft wire fence around our whole property. When guests dogs come over its been fine.. but we are right below a busy road and I lost my cat to it a few months ago when he got out. Since then, we've been convinced we either need to reinforce the entire fence line or build a smaller dog yard behind the house. We can't afford to reFence the whole lot. So instead we are going to build the dog yard adjacent to the house, and we've trying to decide what kind of fencing to use. Didn't know about Vinyl.. and I passed the info along to Mr. Fixit.

I have NO experience, but if you have a big dog... even if it's a lazy or lo energy one.. I would have to think bigger is better. if nothing else, for the peace of mind. I don't know if any of you have lost an animal to a car.. .but it's heartbreaking. Mainly cuz you blame yourself for letting the animal get out in the first place.

We originally were going to go with wood but after looking at the bottoms of our doors when we have put Maxine in a room when we have had company etc., we realized wood is just asking for trouble... or destruction.

I am still "on the fence" about the height. We have someone coming out in a couple of weeks with a 4' and a 5' panel so we can see what they look like and how much they need. The less obtrusive the better, so if we can get away with 4', we will. But with Maxine, I am just not sure.

Cleo had never challenged a fence in 3 years, but she did it to the one preventing her from getting somewhere she really, really wanted to go...and she made it over a 4' fence easily. I would never, ever go less than 6'.

We have 4' chainlink on one side of the yard, 5' chainlink on the other and a wooden privacy fence at the back which is about 6' I thinks. The way the snow has drifted, Kia could easily walk over the 4' but she doesn't even think of it. She can jump high enough to easily clear it if she really tried. But, she is only 33 pounds. lol

If the motivation is high enough, any dog will go under, over, or through a fence. We had a mastiff weighing 210lb go over an 8' high solid wood fence (a smooth walled stallion paddock). How he scaled/jumped it we never figured out, but one moment he was locked safely in the pen, the next he was in the barn aisle with us looking for his full sister who had just come in to heat. Mastiff schutzhund anyone?
Truffle is the first swissy we've had here who tests the fence. He turns himself to jello and squirms through amazingly small gaps. We're rethinking the fence thing ourselves right now. He doesn't go anywhere, but I can't leave him out when I do chores and can't pay 100% attention to him, because he'll wander. He's surprised when he can't get back to me because he's on the wrong side of the fence.
Not sure we can afford to refence the 2 acres around the house - ughh.

Well, Reggie has pulled a crate in through the door so it wasn't blocking a hallway and let himself out of my front door. If someone is going to get out, it's going to be him.

We have a steele fence because we wanted to make sure if the girls put their feet on the top they would not bend it. Ours is 4 feet too(city) and Lowe has yet to clear it but this winter we put her on the run for several weeks after the big show.. bring them here and see if they can jump it. We have plenty of squirrls as Lowe Taged one this week.

Ah yes how could I forget the Great Escape of 2009? Or 2010 was it?

We are not going to do a 6' between us and our neighbors. They are a bit annoyed we are putting one up at all and because we like them a great deal, we are doing a picket. Just have to determine if 4' will be enough or if we go 5.

Along the back is a whole other story. We would put up a 10' if we could, just to hide the mean old man who swears at us all the time.

We have one guy coming Friday morning to give an estimate. We does wood and vinyl so it is a nice start. The Wam Bam people have already given us their prices and we have to take into account that we would be installing that stuff ourselves.
