Hubby wants an e-reader for his birthday next month. Any suggestions for one that just serves as a book? I have seen a Sony product but I really don't know anything about them. He doesn't want any bells and whistles on it.

This may help...and me...I do really like my kindle. Yep really

My husband just got a Kindle last week and he loves it.
He travels all of the time and reads a lot.
I'm just so thankful there will no longer be a huge pile of books on his table in the den.
I'm using my ipad as an e-reader...Only problem is I can't take it to the beach or the pool..
Not sure if I would a Kindle either but the Kindle is much smaller.

Remember I didn't want one...I take it everywhere. Its great for Dr's offices where I seem to be spending lots of time.
At first I didn't like the Kindle, but after being forced to use it or die of boredom on a long trip I LOVE it now! It has become addicting- downloading books. I take it everywhere as well!
I didn't want one either. Dan and I share a lot of books, though, and he switched already. I will never switch back. I can't tell you how awesome it is to have when you travel. The amount of space I save in my luggage is incredible.

I love my kindle, too. I like that the screen is more book-like and not another computer screen that I get tired of looking at. I went a bit crazy with downloading books at first, now I use it a lot to read articles for school.

Kindle is the bomb. I could not imagine life without one. It replaces A BOOK and nothing more or less. Period. Forever n ever Amen. I am a convert.

i use the kindle and nook aps on the ipad. ipad is a bit heavy and doesnt have the electronic ink so its not as eye friendly but I love having it. I dont think you can go wrong getting any of the devices tbh. Just know that the nook is owned by barnes and noble and they are in serious financial trouble. Not sure how that will fare out for them in the long run.
I too use the kindle app on my ipad. I love the convenience of getting any book at any time. But, about every third book I read I need a real book.
I figure even if B&N goes belly up, I can always root my Nook and use it as a tablet since it is based on an Android system. Or really I can have hubby do that since he is more of the IT person in the house.![]()
Thanks for all the information. Either Kindle or Nook sound good. I guess I'll just let him choose.
I agree, you can't go wrong with either one. I have used both, and there are things I like about both of them. My niece has a Kindle, I have a Nook, we traded for a day, I think I like the Nook better, but probably just because it was the first one I was used to using. I LOVE it. I did not know B & N was in trouble, OMG, what would be left if they go belly up? The only other bookstore near me is Borders and it is closing! I will die! It is my favorite hangout!
We ended up getting a Kobo. It was relatively inexpensive, has e-ink which is fabulous and is very light. Hubs can download books by himself (he is not computer literate unlike moi). He is happy so I am happy.
How is the ipad for reading and downloading books?
from what i understand the major drawback to reading books on the ipad is that its no different from reading books on a computer screen. so after awhile you'll suffer from eyestrain and all the fun that goes along with that. with the e-ink of the kindle its really no different than reading a book, so you can read for hours with no problems.
hours...and HOURS AND HOURS. I do this...and I never get anything but the "usual" headache that comes from me reading a real book for that long. Concentrating on anything long term can do that, knitting or reading, or heck, driving! But my eyes do great! Kindles rule.

I am really impressed with the battery on the Kindle. Its really does last days and sometimes a few weeks between needing recharged.
