Default Seafood in General, Clams in specific

Hey Dog lovin' folks - I just got a windfall of raw food for the pups - I have all kinds of stuffs that I have fed the kids before, so I am okay with most of the food. However, we ended up with quite a few pounds of raw (Alaskan) clams and I am curious if any of you know if it is okay to feed them to the pups. Tink and Roofie-Doof both love salmon, halibut and any other fin-fish, but I am unsure if raw clams (or shellfish in general) are okay for them. HALP...and thanks!!

I've fed shrimp - raw and cooked - to ours before w/no probs. I've never tried clams before. I wouldn't hesitate w/Indy, but I don't think I would w/Mr. Sensitive Belly.

I asked the rawfeeding list about lobster tails and that seemed to be safe.

Shellfish can harbor algal toxins, but if they were fished for human consumption, then they'd already have been surveyed for these issues. I'd feed a small amount and do a wait and see kind of thing.

Thanks Sam - we gave the kids a couple of them last night and they seemed to do okay with them. Tink wrinkled her nose at them, but as soon as Rufus showed interest in HERS she gobbled 'em right up! No gas this AM and neither of them seemed to any the worse because of them, so we're gonna keep feeding them!
And Pam - if they hadn't been in the freezer for 5 YEARS they would have ended up in my belly!!

Call me paranoid but there is a reason they post warnings on the menu of seafood restaurants with raw clams. Lots of people consume them with no problem but if you (or your dog) have any kind of immunity issues or liver problems, stay far away from them.

When we lived in Louisiana, where raw clams are served EVERYWHERE, a friend's husband DIED from raw clams he had eaten from a reputable restaurant. He had some past liver issues which made them unable to process the bacteria the clams had in them.

SO enjoy your clams everyone but please BE CAREFUL!
