    Default puppy transport

I know it's ideal to go pick up your pup, but I don't think I'll be able to. I had Basja flown to me in Sept and this time it's going to be a bit colder for the next pup. The flight will be about 2.5 hours. I need advice on crate materials and maybe have the puppy wear a sweater? I've seen cats shipped with 1/2 the crate filled with shredded news paper for warmth. I planned on sending a crate, sweater and blanket that I've slept with to be used for transport. She will be going Delta.

Ptoby was flown to us in WI the beginning of February. He had a blanket in the crate, but no extra insulation, and he did wonderfully (well, except when they lost him in Milwaukee and he wet his crate ). I realize that swissies have much more coat than danes, but I don't think I'd want a puppy in a sweater for the first time unattended. Maybe just extra bedding to burrow in if needed. If not needed, pup can just sit on top. I'm so excited for you.

no sweater...imagine them eating it or choking on it? No. Shredded paper makes the best bedding...the person she is coming from ought to be familiar with the do's and don'ts of shipping. Did the pup clear the Health Cert for acclimation to the cold weather? The airline will want that...esp if they have cold embargo's in place. If you want to scent mark something use something like a toy meant to stand up to a lot of chewing. Blankets or anything with "thread" or fringe make me nervous. Too easily tied around limbs or teeth...or worse, balled up in the stomach. Less is more when shipping. No collar...no tags. Nothing to get caught on anything. Microchip for ID...plenty of zip ties on ALL parts of the crate including the door so stupid airline employees are not temped to open it.

Delta is an okay choice...Continental is better. They have special climate controlled trucks to minimize the tarmac exposure for the animals from terminal to plane.

Thanks! I guess I'll go with shredded paper and zip ties. Basja came with nothing but puke in her crate and vet wrap on her ears.

Yes it's MUCH better that the paper be shredded vs laying flat because then the messes, if any,..get covered up and the pup isn't just stuck there sitting in it. I haven't actually had a pup do more than pee. Most shippers know not to feed beforehand aside from a miniscule amt...that helps. Freezing the water in the cup that attached to the crate is also a great thing because then it won't spill and it can still offer water over the course of the flight as it slowly melts.

Not until the 16th now. Change of plans, military effed me over so I have to wait til I get back. If all goes perfect, I'll fly to MSP after my military BS in the morning and meet her plane around noon.
