    Default Vomiting

Cash has thrown up twice tonight. He ate like normal at 5:30 and then he had his first Heartgard at 6:30. We was curled up on my lap at about 9:00 when I felt him tense up and then he vomited. Afterward he curled back up with me and was okay for a short bit and then same thing again about 9:20. He seems okay otherwise. He's been active today like normal, eating, drinking. The only thing different is the Heartgard. Thoughts?

hmmmm, don't know. My dogs have never thrown them up. But it could have unsettled his belly. I would just keep an eye on him today and see how it goes.(did he keep the heart gaurd down?)

I don't know about Heartguard but most heartworm prevention needs to be given with food because it needs some fat to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Check with your vet or the manufacturer about Heartguard...

He's a normal, happy, crazy puppy this morning so who knows what got to him. The vet didn't say he needed to take it with food, but he did have a full tummy as he had just eaten 45 min to an hour before he got it. I will give it with the meal next time though and we'll see. Thanks for your thoughts!

Did he throw up bile? Or did something come up with it? Swissies are famous for throwing up when they're hungry...but in my experience, it's normally in the morning (or over night) after 10+ hours without any food. Because of it, I tend to make sure they get a small treat before bed and one in the morning if it's going to be a while before I feed them.

I don't always feed Heartguard with a meal, and I can't remember having issues with upchuck after it.

No, it wasn't bile. It was food. Between the two times I think he lost most of his dinner. He usually eats 4x daily (7, 12:30, 5:30 and 10:30 - all times are "ish.") The breeder recommended resting his tummy overnight. We did that except for a tiny handful of food to keep him from doing the bile vomiting. He threw a fit in his crate (first time he hasn't just gone to bed) from the time my husband put him to bed at 12:30 until about 1:30. I came down a couple times in there and took him outside, but he just whined at me out there and tried to curl up on my feet. Finally, at 1:30 I thought of giving him the sweatshirt and he settled down in the crate on my sweatshirt and fell asleep and slept until 7 like usual. He's back to his normal self this morning....silly, goofy puppy.

Well, the overnight/crate stuff sounds about right. If he doesn't throw up again today, I'm going to guess it was the Heartguard that bothered him.

Okay, so I gave him the sweatshirt off my back in the middle of the night to settle him and it worked. Now, he has pulled it out of the crate and is laying with his butt on my feet and his head on my sweatshirt. Did I ever mention he is a total mama's boy? LOL!!

I have never given Heartguard with food and we've never had a problem. Cash is a in a new environment and everything is interesting. He may have eaten something off the floor that didn't agree with him. I think this is more stressful on you . LOL

    Ear fluffs to Cash!

Heartgard bothers Reggie's stomach. He doesn't throw up every time I give it to him but about every other. Even with his meal (I stuff it into the chicken).

What I have done in the past is feed him dinner then give him a portion of the Heartgard. Wait a few minutes, give him another portion and a couple of treats. Repeat until gone. Yes, he ends up eating a bit more but he doesn't throw it up then.

Thanks for the idea! I will try this next time.

No more vomiting. Totally normal, happy puppy. I'll try to post photo evidence later today...
