    Default It's time....

da da da daaaaa. Cue the tragic music. It's time for Toby to go in for his neutering surgery on Wednesday. Any tips, suggestions, questions I should make sure to ask the vet etc? Remedies for when we get home? Tips for keeping him still for a few days? sympathy treats for him?
I know, he's going to be spoiled.
Poor guy. He has no idea what's going to happen...
    Thanks for any tips!

Is he going to stay overnight? If not, he will be dopey when you bring him home. I always take up the water and food bowls until they are wide awake... You can provide ice cubes if he is thirsty.

He will probably be bruised in "that area" so be prepared for that.
I would also make sure I had access to an e-collar just in case...He'll lick and lick and lick...As long as he's not pulling his stitches he'll be fine.
Your vet will probably ask you to restrict his activity for few days...

Trust me - he'll bounce back really quickly...

    Good luck Toby!!

It didn't bother Jasper at all. He jumped up on the sofa and went to sleep. He looked between his legs one time and that was about it for him.

Goodluck Toby. I also used an ecollar for Cole just to be on the safe side. I couldn't keep the cone on him....I felt so bad. He was back to his normal self pretty much by the next day. He slept from the time he got home until the next morning.

I don't remember much about Gryffin's surgery, and Beowulf came prefixed. What I would say from my experience with Indy is wait to give him that first pain pill and see if he really needs it. I gave Indy her pill on the first day at about 9 or 10am and then she became hard to keep quiet. We gave her one the next day, too... If I could do it again, I might give one the first day, maybe not. But I would definitely avoid the second day...

Good luck Toby... I have had several males neutered and they recover so much faster than the bitches. Your main concern will be trying to make sure they arent too active or licking at it... Doesnt seem to bother them too entirely much. Most of the males Ive had done were wanting to run around the next day.

Yep, Toby will be just fine! Didn't have any issues with Tek, other than the licking. He's pretty lazy, so keeping him calm wasn't really an issue.

Thanks for the reassurance. He is going to be there overnight so I'll send some of his food along with in case he gets hungry. It took a long time to figure out a food that didn't upset his tummy that I don't want him just eating whatever is at the vet's office. It will be very hard to keep him still I think. He's hyper enough as it is and loves to have his zoomies...we'll keep those to a minimum.
after 10 tonight I have to stave him...I feel so bad because he usually eats overnight and not much during the day. Poor guy.

If he's staying overnight at the vet, will he be monitored? To me, it seems to be a little overkill to keep them unless you will be unable to watch him that first night.

I've never heard of a neutering staying overnight unless there were complications or other health concerns. Our Ptoby was neutered at 5, and even as an older dog, came home the same afternoon. Neutering is much less invasive than spaying. I'm sure he'll hardly notice it. Dogs are so much more stoic than we are.
Best of luck to the other Toby!

P.S. What Melissa said about being monitored! If no-one's going to be watching him overnight, insist on bringing him home.

Most vets send them home same day if they are up and awake post-op.

Toby's got a heart murmur so I wonder if that's why or if the vet normally does this. We haven't had another dog to compare at this vet. When we go in the morning I'll find out about the monitering. I'm nervous now. The pre op call today made it sound like the overnight was pretty standard. I'll check on that tomorrow. Thanks all!

I remember when Baroooo was getting Xena's spay and pexy done last month, they kept them overnight (not monitored) if the family didn't have the ability to keep them quiet or crated.

Don't be nervous. Toby will be absolutely fine.

Katie is spending the day on the road so I figured that I'd update this thread... Toby was dropped off at the vet this morning at about 8 am CDT. We'll be getting a call when all of the surgeries are complete (so it could be awhile yet). When Katie asked the vet about keeping him overnight she was told that that was their standard procedure for all surgeries (even neuters) and that it wasn't any cause for concern.
