    Default First time off lead

Cleo did it. I was impressed. I have never trained a formal recall for her. I mean she knows her name and ALWAYS approaches anyone squatted down so I gave her a try today at the schoolyard. She had on her dragline...and did fine while we all played frisbee or flew the kite, she wandered a bit, found a puddle and layed in it! Typical Leo...they have Mud-Dar you know.

She was trying to keep up with everyone at once...dh and Lily were on the track and I was off with Elias so she kept running in between us LOL.

Finally I went over to the track too so she wouldn't kill herself going back and forth. She was trying to interfere with the scooterLily vs RunningDaddy race...of course going ONLY after RunningDaddy...

I think she did pretty good off lead. Of course there was NOBODY else there... she loves people so much I am SURE I could not get away with having her on a dragline with anyone else around. But it's a start. The schoolyard is empty often enough that I think it could be a fun way to spend time with her...the fact that she tires so quickly really works in our favor because she'd be way less inclined to run off due to pure laziness, right? LOL.

I might have to actually work with her on it, I am not a big off lead person but it would be nice to have her around to keep the kids rounded up. I saw her working them a bit like sheep today....trying to keep us all in an area and moving her body around to block a kid from getting too far away from her LOL!

She does have a very strong instinct to stay with us and isn't really one to run AWAY from a person trying to grab her so that's good.

I can't imagine she'd ever leave your guys' side. Well unless she smelled a baby animal of somesort.

My little ones are very good off lead (unless Bella gets a rabbit scent, then all bets are off) Spencer is glued to my side. I don't know about Daisy, I am always afraid that people would be so scared of her and cause a problem with her off a leash.

Hooray for Cleo! We use the school grounds to work with Cash off lead, also. Glad you were able to give her some freedom and she did well with it.

Such a good girl! It's a good thing there weren't baby bunnies, bird, or anything else needing caring hanging around.

LOL I know! There were a couple of dogs talking smack at her thru their chain link fences at the edges of the schoolyard but she did ignore them...so that gives me hope I can do some work with her and get her being pretty good just wearing a tab type leash soon!

It's been ages since I had a dog that could be trusted a bit off lead (I never trust them the whole way).

Yeah, I love Beagles, but if they catch a scent, they're gone. Same with Bassets, but they are MUCH slower and can be caught.

Yep and before that I had Akitas. Not a breed that needs to be off the chain (leash folks. I don't chain my dogs lol)...ever. LOL. I am SO not a Herding breed person but they do have some really clingy stick to ya dogs in that Group.

Kia has a very reliable recall and we never trained her for that. She is such a velcro dog that we can call her back any time. And she is a herding breed!!! We let her off leash at the dog park and our local park which is not an off leash park. If someone is in the park that does not have a dog, we leash her up immediately.

yep, it is shocking LOL. Roxy does good off lead. There are times when she acts as if she is going to ignore us, but snaps out of it. We start every off lead situation with a drag line just to be sure. And there is only 1 situation where she won't listen off lead....and that is anywhere there is a body of water LOL..once in water all her hearing turns off LOL.

she loved hiking off lead!! Honestly though..there are not many places here in iowa, so she hasn't been off leash outside of the yard since July..so i have no idea how she'd react right now.
