    Default UPDATE on Doberman rescue

OK, these people that have this dog, there is no nice way to say it, they are dirt bags. They are now trying to get money for their poor neglected dog that they were so willing to just give to my BIL. He can't be involved, he is a police officer so he just told us about the dog and we had to contact him on our own. My MIL talked to the owners who now want to get some money for their dog. They have a "buddy" who will pay $200 for him, so they don't just want to give him to us for nothing. We explained to him that we want him to go to a really nice rescue where they will neuter him, microchip him, test him for heartworms, treat him if necessary, and carefully screen a wonderful home to put him in where he will live in the lap of luxury and sleep on a down comforter every night of his life, and most importantly, make sure he has found his forever home. Well, they don't give a rat's ass about that, they just want money. I'm not really in a position to pay $200 for this dog to turn over to rescue but I'm agonizing over the thought of him being bounced to another dead beat or just left in his own back yard to rot, and don't know what to do. I have not called my contact at doberman rescue back to see what he suggest that I do. She promised us that she will not sell him before Monday but I don't know how confident I am about that, all I can do is pray that she won't. My MIL said if we show up with $100, which we can both probably put up $50 each between us, she would probably hand him over to us, so I have a feeling that's what we'll have to do to get him. I can't just leave him there to rot. I will talk to the rescue guy again, maybe he can go with me to get him. The thing is, she apparently really loves the dog and likes the idea of us taking him since she likes us, but she has no idea that I plan to give him to rescue to find him a good home and I was hoping that he would go directly to rescue and not have to come to me since I assume he is probably not good with cats since he has not been around them and been a back yard dog. We could always lock the cats up for the night and take him in for the night, Steve is just nervous about that because he doesn't know if this dog will bite one of the kids or God forbid one of the cats gets out, or what if he doesn't get along with Greta? What should I do????? These people live in a horrible neighborhood, rampant with crime, another reason I just wanted the rescue place to go pick him up. Help! KIm! Tell me what I should do! I never had a situation like this with springer rescue so I don't know what I should do, I don't know how ethical you have to be when dealing with people, can you lie and tell them you are taking him when you are really giving him over to a rescue, I just don't know what I should do. I just know that I have to get him. Hopefully they will wait and not sell him off. I will place another call to the rescue guy tonight and see what he says I should do. I friggin hate people that buy a dog like this that they can't care for. I am so nervous that he is full of fleas, ticks and heartworms. This sucks.

Maybe you answered this earlier and I missed it, but can't you call animal control and report him as a neglected dog?

    (((hugs)))

First of all, most of the time "the rescue" doesn't just go pick them up...In situations like this there is usually some cajoling and negotiating and guilt inducement going on behind the scenes...Trust me, it happens with ESRA all of the time - you may just not have seen it...

It is not at all uncommon for people to want ESRA to pay them for their dog...It happened with the Springer I pulled from Gulf Shores earlier this year...Same thing with Remy that ended up next door...Both of those dogs were on CraigsList "for sale"....ESRA didn't pay either of those people for those dogs...We basically just shamed them into handing them over to us...

If this woman truly cares about this dog - you may be able to do that with her...Focus on what is best for the dog - not about her situation...

If you offer them $100 cash they will probably give you the dog...But then you've got to figure out what the next step is...
As you know, it could be days or weeks before this dog can get into rescue...We've had situations at ESRA-AL recently where there was not a foster home available right away...

You bring up some valid points about the cats, about Greta and about yourselves...

Get in touch with your local rescue contact and see what they advise you to do and how they can help you get this dog out of her situation...

You do the best you can do Lee Ann...That's all anyone expects you to do....Hang in there...(((hugs)))

still waiting on a call back from the rescue. I'm hoping we can time it so that he can take this dog quickly if I get him. He said he currently has 20 dogs, 14 in foster care and I'm thinking he must have the rest at his facility? I guess, I don't even know. I'm afraid if I were to report him as a neglected dog he would go to animal control and they will just hand him over to whoever tries to adopt him, I don't think they screen them very well, or worse, think he is dangerous and have him pts, so I don't want to do that. Hopefully I will have something to report about all of this by tomorrow.
